Description:

The Matrix Mixer is a DIY project for adding color control, feedback routings and advanced mixing to your system. The panel is 14HP and the pcb is low profile, 2.5cm deep, suitable for skiffs

Everything is through-hole. This build is considered suitable for ‘advanced beginners’.

The circuit is based on the ‘simple video mixer’ by L. Larsen, extented to a matrix configuration with extra’s. The design has evolved thanks to community effort.

From a 3x3 to a 4x3

with an inverted input + the option to mod it with gain potmeters.

You can read about the progress here: [/forum/

Features:

Each row has 4 potmeters for those 4 inputs which makes 12 potmeters in total.

The 3 inputs are normalised together for easy patching. The Inverted input can be used to subtract shapes from the mix.

sign me for a pcb+panel/ 6172 set shipped to the states!

#14 — reverselandfill · 2019-11-21

Note for the kit orders:

Some of the panels had scratches / white blemishes on them. The factory is sending me new ones. I don’t know how much time this will take though. I guess a few weeks.

When the good panel sets run out, I will hold the orders.

#15 — rempesm · 2019-11-21

Can you point me in the right direction for the color / material you used for these panels? I plan to make a 4HP expander panel for the 3 gain pots and some switches for the gain range. It’d be lovely to have it match but doesn’t really matter.

#16 — reverselandfill · 2019-11-21

I used pcb material. The pcb’s were ordered at dirtypcbs. But I think the color red is the same at most pcb houses. If you want, I can scan the panel and send it to you.

#17 — VanTa · 2019-11-22

I don’t mind scratches. It gives an even more DIY feeling.

#18 — reverselandfill · 2019-11-22

haha ok whatever you say

:bomb:

:dagger:

I have just the one for you!

#19 — reverselandfill · 2019-11-22

#34 — rempesm · 2019-12-19

My kit showed up today and it’s an incredibly useful module, especially with the inverted input. Didn’t do the gain or switched amplitude expander yet but will share that here when it’s done.

Look forward to your next module, Martjin!

#35 — reverselandfill · 2019-12-19

the new matrix mixer pcb’s & panels are just in.

current stock = 23 sets (chaos mode engaged)

#36 — SeanKing · 2019-12-23

I have a question. Will this mix actual composite video signals, like a standalone video mixer? In other words, could this function as a eurorack substitute for something like a Roland Edirol V4 video mixer? Or does it do something else? (Apologies if this is a dumb question, I’m fairly new to video synth and completely new to eurorack.)

No, this is for mixing LZX patchable video (aka “1V”, since signals are between 0 and 1 volts) signals.

Various LZX modules (Visual Cortex, Vidiot, Cadet III) can extract luma from composite video as a 1V patchable signal, but color information is lost. Visual Cortex can decode separate R, G, and B channels from a component (Y/Pb/Pr) input. TBC2 and Chromagnon (and other Automata modules) will be able to decode composite video.

Visual Cortex’s compositor section and Marble Index are capable of a variety of video mixing / compositing functionality with 1V video signals, with video-rate voltage control. As a matrix mixer this module is a bit more like Color Chords – it sums individual signals together, rather than crossfading or wiping between multiple full-color sources as you might do with a video mixer. Matrix mixers have some interesting applications in video and audio synthesis, especially in feedback patches.

@csboling thanks for the detailed answer, I appreciate it.

first patch with the matrix mixer!

I was getting some weird artifacts every once and a while that I’m pretty sure was just cables but I’ll have to try it out some more and see if it shows back upthank you for this wonderful project!

I can imagine how fun it would be to swap around the order of a passage, matrix mixer, mapper combo

EDIT: added a picture of the patch

lovely!

A quick reminder to people building the matrix mixer:

if you don’t do the MODS, don’t forget to link/bridge the MOD points as described in the BOM.

#42 — sumawave · 2020-01-13

Howdy! I would like 1 PCB&Panel set, Please.

#43 — Jefro · 2020-03-04

I just got my PCB and panel in the mail yesterday, I’m really looking forward to assembling it this weekend!

#44 — reverselandfill · 2020-03-04

As a note:

This kit will be available in some shops soon.

:star_struck:

I have pcb’s, panels and kits in stock too!

#45 — reverselandfill · 2020-03-12

I just made a very cool feedback patch with the Matrix Mixer and my Monotropa feedback EQ module. I’ll try to capture it better soon (my cable was too short), so for now it is a screen capture.

Description : filtered video feedback loop with voltage control over the ‘whiteout’.

The movement is done with a MN Maths, into the Monotropa input

#46 — reverselandfill · 2020-06-21

I’m working on a new version which has better MOD possibilities, in form of a large header and a Expander panel.

The GAIN options can be set with jumpers when the Expander is not used.

The GAIN settings for the INV channels might be updated too.

Another option is to add all these functions on the main panel. this would require it to become a stacked project with a main pcb and a pots pcb. , or a larger panel. Not sure yet what direction I will go with this.

#47 — reverselandfill · 2020-08-16

Here is a glitch feedback patch with the Matrix Mixer and the Syntonie VU002 frequency doubler.

These are great stills. What’s your capture method?

The first one is 100% an illithid emerging from from the feedback.

#50 — reverselandfill · 2020-08-17

rempesm wrote:

illithid

I had to look that one up

nice!I capture with a Canopus ADVC-100 (firewire) into Adobe Premiere

(forgot to de-interface the frames. but it still looks cool)

#51 — Robbertunist · 2020-09-08

@reverselandfill

Hi Martijn👋🏼

I’m really curious to hear how development on an updated or new version of your Matrix Mixer is coming along.

#52 — reverselandfill · 2020-09-08

I’ve ordered a slightly updated version with a big header at the back for selecting the gain levels with jumpers.

This makes it easy to add an expander panel with some other options too

I am still pondering about a bigger version with switches and maybe ‘overall’ level pots and more inverted channels.

#53 — rempesm · 2020-09-08

I’ve found the mods you already suggested in the build guide are helpful. Soft keying mixer modes for the 3 channels with overall level control per column makes this module shine. I wired up a 20 pin header on mine so I could revert it to normal functionality but haven’t found the need yet.

Would be great to see a version with this built into the panel already and definitely second having inverted inputs per channel.

#54 — reverselandfill · 2020-09-08

yes . my (small updated) one also has a 20pin header

The expanded version will have gain pots for each column , switches for gain and 3 inverted channels

I just have to figure out where to place all the switches. most layout work is ready.

#55 — reverselandfill · 2020-09-19

The new batch of pcb’s are in (with the 20pin expander on the back)

now you can set all gain levels, including the inverted input, by way of jumpers settings

#56 — rempesm · 2020-09-19

Do you have pictures of the new PCBs? I’m curious how you routed the 20 pin expander.

#57 — reverselandfill · 2020-09-19

updated images with correct values & better routings
