Welcome all to another exciting patch challenge. At the end of another wild year, this patch challenge is going to be open and interpretive. What do you want 2022 to look like for yourself or for the world (or both, for the solipsist)? What do you hope for? World peace? Alien invasion? A new pair of shoes? Enlightenment? Feel free to answer this question with a short piece of video art, utilizing LZX modules.

How to enter

Simply send me a link (via private message here on the forum) to a video created for this patch challenge, along with a description of the patch (modules/gear used, signal path, etc). The video can be as long or as short as you wish and use whatever method and gear you desire, so long as LZX is a part of the patch. Sound is optional.

All entries are due by midnight (US Central Standard Time) on December 29th. Voting takes place here on the forum, starting on December 30th and closing just before midnight (US Central Standard Time) on the 31st. The winner of the patch challenge will be announced on January 1, 2022.

Is there a prize?!

Yes, a mystery prize will be awarded to the winner of the patch challenge.

I wish you luck, video explorer.

Is there a Brown Shoes Only clause to the new shoes category??

#3 — Z0NK0UT · 2021-12-17

The brown shoes of 2022 won’t be shoes at all!

#4 — DaydreamDevices · 2021-12-17

I’m still keeping the hashtag alive in my insta feed forever and ever. Energy can’t be destroyed, only transformed. Hit me with some burnt umber wingtips!

#5 — brendanleespengler · 2021-12-18

Can entries be sent directly to the LZX email?

#6 — Z0NK0UT · 2021-12-18

I would prefer links and descriptions be sent via DM here on the forum.

Only 37 hours before the deadline. The challenge is heating up!

our system isn’t currently setup so unfortunately I think this will be one of the first contests we won’t be entering

but we are looking forward to seeing what you all come up with

The theme is new years ball drops-> celebration-> hope there’s some snow on the east coast so I can ski this year.>>>> I used r_e_c_u_r into structure into visual cortex into doorway and back into visual cortex on channel A. On channel B I used fortress into staircase into passage into visual cortex.

Modules/equipment used for the video section were, Visual Cortex, Memory Palace, Topogram, Staircase, Cadet RGB Encoder, Cadet Fader, Cadet Keyer, Fox Shutter, Syntonie VU003, Castle Multi Gate, Synthesis Technology E350, Unity CV Mixer, Sony DSC1024G (x2) and XOR Nerdseq.

There are essentially three visual elements to this piece.

Element 1 - The disco sky is camera feedback from a CRT that is controlled and textured by LZX Topogram and Staircase. It goes through a Sony DSC1024G to frame synchronise it and also to add a slight delay to stop the feedback blowing out. Switching the disco sky in was achieved using a Cadet Fader. The feedback goes back to the monitor through a Cadet RGB Encoder module.

Element 2 - This is a video clip from a fell (mountain/hill) opposite Buttermere in the Lake District (England, UK) when I was taking the dog for a walk. This is played on loop and comes in to the video synth via a Sony DSC1024G.

Element 3 - The frame based animations of the dog, the money and the modules are played from the LZX Memory Palace. I manually cut out the backgrounds of each of the frames and made them transparent using pre-processing in the GIMP/BIMP/G’MIC on a computer.

Elements 1 and 2 are composited in Fox’s Shutter using a mask that is made from a couple of LZX Visual Cortex ramps and an oscillator. The gradient of the mask (to approximately match the scenery) is created by adding the horizontal and vertical ramps in different proportions (using a ReverseLandfill CMIX mixer). This is keyed in the Cadet Keyer. I used the Castle Multi Gate to logically combine the gradient with a synced audio oscillator, as the audio oscillator provided a longer pulse width than I could get from the Castle Clock VCO. The Nerdseq sequences the disco sky getting switched in by controlling a Cadet Fader that switched the Shutter mask on or off.

The two animations in Element 3 (Memory Palace) are animated using envelopes generated by Nerdseq (basically just rising voltages with zero decay). They both have different numbers of frames in them, so the envelopes need to be different amplitudes. There needs to be a different offset voltage added in order to ‘switch’ between each of the three animation sets.

Post-production on the video was limited to fading in, fading out and applying a slight curve to make the video look like it did on my monitor. Audio was recorded into an audio recorder and added to the video in post as the audio on my video recorder sounds bad and is only really suitable for guide positioning.

Wow - crazy its only 4 this time. Admittedly I barely got mine in with all the holiday festivities. Nice work for the folks who made it in - nice to see each one is very unique. Cheers not Fears for 2022!
