Copyright and licensing
This repository holds specification material and tooling written by LZX Industries. It stores no third-party documents; data/sources.json records each one consulted. The survey and the catalog rail sections are in the eis-reference repository under the same terms. See also the bibliography.

Patents
LZX Industries knows of no patent that is essential to implementing EIS: the specification describes a mechanical and electrical interface, and its dimensions, connectors, voltages, and signal classes are, to LZX's knowledge, in common use or drawn from the published standards it references.
If that knowledge is wrong, LZX Industries grants to everyone, royalty-free and without further condition, a license under any patent claim it holds or controls that is essential to implementing a requirement or a recommendation of EIS, for the purpose of implementing EIS. The license covers every edition and survives the publication of a later one. It does not extend to a product feature that EIS does not require or recommend.
A contribution to EIS is accepted on the same terms: by proposing text or data for the specification, a contributor grants the same royalty-free license under any patent claim it holds or controls that is essential to implementing what it contributed. A contributor who cannot grant that license says so in the proposal, and the proposal is not merged.
Trademarks and the conformance statement
The LZX mark and the name LZX Industries are trademarks of LZX Industries. Nothing here licenses them: a maker names LZX Industries only to attribute the specification, as in the example below, and never on a product, its packaging, or its marketing as a sign of approval.
The name EIS, the title Eurorack Interface Specification, and a future "EIS conformant" mark are reserved for products that conform. A maker may state that a product conforms to EIS when all of the following hold:
- The product has a claim file that
eis claimvalidates with noTODOfigure outstanding (Conformance 4.2). - The statement names the edition the claim is made against, in the claim line of clause 4.2, and that edition is a tag on this repository; a claim against the draft names
EIS draftand is not a statement of conformance. - The product publishes the figures the register asks of its product type and features, where the claim file says they are published.
- The maker, not LZX Industries, makes the statement and is answerable for it (Conformance 4.3); LZX Industries certifies nothing and tests no product.
A statement that lacks one of these is not an EIS conformance statement and does not use the name. LZX Industries may ask a maker to withdraw a statement whose claim file does not validate, and may publish that it asked. The "EIS conformant" mark itself does not yet exist; when it does, this page says what it looks like and the same four conditions govern its use.
The Eurorack name
EIS uses "Eurorack" as the common name of the format the specification describes, the modular synthesizer format whose rack, panel, and bus conventions trace to the Doepfer A-100 system. The name is used to identify the format and nothing more; it does not claim any association with or endorsement by Doepfer Musikelektronik GmbH, and any right Doepfer holds in the name is unaffected by this specification.
