Connecting Liquid TV to Visual Cortex

Open original thread

Hello – I just took my first LZX plunge and ordered a VC and Liquid TV. Can someone confirm whether I need to connect them together via the RCA connections in the rear of the modules for sync purposes?

you don’t have to but you can

if you don’t then you can plug one of the visual cortex RCA outputs into the liquid tv RCA input and then still patch signals into the 1,2,3, inputs

or if you have the RCA cables connected behind the front panels then you could just freely patch to the 1,2,3 inputs

for me it mostly depends on if I think I’ll be plugging other external non LZX system sources into the RCA jack on the front

The standard composite input will work without a sync cable. However, In order for the preview driver to function you would need a sync cable to go from both modules (Visual Cortex Sync Out to Liquid TV Sync In).

Hello,
So sorry, but I’m still not understanding this…I do appreciate your response, though! If I connect the RCA cable in the rear, what cable(s) do I use to connect the VC to the Liquid TV?
Thank you!
Jim

The Sync cables I use for my system are available to buy from the LZX website. These cables were designed specifically for Sync. I think you might be able to use standard yellow composite cables, but I’m not 100% sure.

I use standard composite cables with right-angle adaptors.

Respirator posted #7 on Nov 13, 2018

nothing special about the cables from LZX (although they are awesome!) you can use regular yellow composite cables.
keep the cables as short as possible for best practice :1st_place_medal:

Yeah, I had a slight feeling that you could use yellow composite cables for sync, but I referred the LZX cables to avoid giving any misleading info that I was unsure about

Have you checked the user reference card? It explains the connections and settings. Let me know if you’re unclear on anything.

I bought a Liquid TV from Perfect Circuit recently, and I’m having trouble getting the Preview function to work. The VID function works perfectly, and I’m able to monitor video on the composite input , but none of the Preview slots work when the switch on the top left is set to PVW and I’ve chosen one of the three slots

I’m syncing it to the Visual Cortex - see the screenshots. I’ve double checked, and swapped cables, but the Preview still eludes me. I tried the Reset in the Menu when in VID mode, but same thing.

I’ve tried patching all sorts of things into the Preview inputs - shapes and ramps from the VC, straight and through Color Chords, output from a Prismatic Ray, luma out from a Vidiot, but no dice.

When on one of the Preview slots, the screen will flash blue briefly with some text that I don’t have time to read - a microsecond and it’s gone.

Hopefully I’m missing something simple. Thoughts?

Looks like you have everything set correctly to me.
If you switch the sync src to “video in”, send the video in (via front) a video signal from cortex, do the preview inputs work now? In either case, best to arrange an RMA with us.

Josh Reineke posted #12 on Jan 29, 2019

When I have the sync switch set to video in, and the composite from the Cortex going to the front of the Liquid TV, everything works, including the preview.

Is having the Liquid TV syncing in the back to the Cortex a problem when also having the Cortex coming into the front via composite for color monitoring?

Liquid TV Question

Open original thread

I just received the Liquid TV module and had a quick question. I have tried it in three Euroracks and cannot get the monitor to so much as flicker when powered on. I have tried pressing the menu button but nothing appears on the screen. Granted I am still waiting on the video looper that I ordered from you, but should I see the screen light up when I power on the Eurorack or press the menu button? I’m so sorry if this is a premature question and the looper is on its way. I am just so excited to use it when the looper arrives and want to make sure it’s working right. Oh, and I checked the switches on the back. Any responses would be so great :pray:t2::blush:

Thanks so much for the response. I have it in standalone mode. And I just tried hooking it up to my iPad and MacBook through an HDMI to composit converter and saw a flicker, yay :grinning:, but no video, boo :unamused:. I’m Probably going to have to wait for the looper with the dedicated composit output to arrive to truly know what’s going on. I have a feeling this hdmi converter might not be up to the challenge. I’m praying this little screen works. It looks so cool in my rack.

Phil Baljeu posted #4 on Jan 13, 2019

Could it be that your PSU isn’t providing enough current? Do you have another PSU you can try it with?

The Falling Girl posted #5 in reply to #4 on Jan 19, 2019

I’ve tried it on three PSUs now. Each has adaquate power for the stated power requirements of the screen. I now have the LZX screen on its own power rail that has over 1amp of power (see screen shot of specs). I cannot so much as make the screen flicker or access a menu. I’m assuming it’s defective. I wouldn’t be adverse to powering it from a power adapter but what do I buy? Is it AC/DC (assuming DC) 12v, right? But how many amps? I really want this to work to rotate my logo at my shows. Can you please help or let me know how to return it for a replacement. I just got it this week from Perfect Circuit. I also bought the Andor 1. But without a screen it’s worthless. Thanks so much. I received a new LiquidTV a week or two ago, and installed it today when my new case (Mantis) arrived. It also appears to be dead. The screen was somewhat loose from the panel when I opened the box, and after testing it (with negative results) I carefully inspected the back of the module. The ribbon cable between the PCB and the display didn’t look properly inserted - a little angled, not fully in in one end. I tried to push it in very gently but it didn’t help. I have sufficient power (have tried with most other modules disconnected, and with external power), and i have tried all sync options. And double-checked that it receives valid signals. I already talked to my distributor (PatchPoint), and it will be returned on warranty.

When I saw your troubles, i just wanted to mention this - maybe there has been a bad batch?

Lars Larsen posted #10 on Jan 24, 2019

If those of you who are having issues with this module could please take a photo of the rear of the module (all the switch settings) and the front of the module (switch settings and cables you’re using) then I can tell you if it should be working or if there’s something misconfigured with the installation.

Everything is tested before being shipped of course, but the display we’re using is an OEM one in Liquid TV, and we’ve had some fails of that assembly occasionally (less than 3 out of the 250 pc production run.) It can be a difficult module to know how to set up correctly, so lets make sure you’ve got it configured right.

Palle Dahlstedt posted #11 on Jan 24, 2019

Thanks - I can certainly do that, but going to bed now  so maybe tomorrow. However, I can assure you that I have tried all possible combinations. And I think I know what I’m doing (but you never know, of course). Still, not a single sign of life.

OK! If you suspect any LZX product is faulty we’re happy to receive it here for warranty repair/replacement any time. Just e-mail support@lzxindustries.net or fill out the form on the website.

How do I mount Liquid TV in Vessel?

Open original thread

The following photos are to clarify the ability and method we use to mount Liquid TV into one of the Vessel cases we use in our studio. Right angle RCA sync cables connect from the Sync Out on Visual Cortex to Liquid TV and then again from Sync Out on Liquid TV to the Sync Bus board on Vessel.

Hey Jonah!
In relation to this subject, the mounting depth for My Liquid TV seems to be a few millimeters off from the length that’s shown on the LZX website. Because of this, my TV doesn’t fit at all on the top right hand corner of my Vessel (next to the fan).
I’ve provided two side view images below of my TV module. You can see how the Video sockets + the PCB extends out more than the picture that you’ve provided of yours.

Lars Larsen posted #3 in reply to #2 on Sep 13, 2018

Your unit definitely looks assembled at more of an angle than I’d like to see. If it’s a problem for your case definitely request a warranty return and we’ll be happy to swap it out: https://www.lzxindustries.net/support/ticket/submit
